Bloodhounds - General Description

Bloodhounds are powerful dogs with extremely loose skin, especially about the head and neck. The Bloodhound is the largest in the hound family. The coat colors can be black, tan, tawny, or red and tan. For its acute sense of smell, the Bloodhound is sometimes called a nose with feet. The habit to sniff everything is typical of the breed in general. These dogs have been bred to track game. The breed has a scary name, however, despite its name, the dogs are gentle, affectionate and well-mannered. These friendly dogs are normally good with children. They are not generally aggressive toward strangers.

Bloodhounds are not dogs for everyone. An average dog lover with little or no experience of a large dog ownership may find the Bloodhound's food requirements, exercise needs and vet bills quite a problem.

Bloodhounds - Breed History

The Bloodhound is an ancient breed. Its true origin is rather vague. In all probability, in the 7th century, St. Hubert and his monks played a significant part in the development of the breed. The name "bloodhound" is derived from the term "blooded hound," which means a hound of pure blood, that is, of pure breeding. Bloodhounds have always been associated with royalty. These dogs were given as gifts in the circles of royalty and nobility. Modern Bloodhounds are believed to have descended from the dogs that William the Conqueror brought to Britain.

The Bloodhound was crossed with a number of breeds in order to produce smaller and faster hound dogs. The use of Bloodhounds declined because of the decreasing game area in Britain. The introduction of dog shows in 1859 gave the Bloodhound breed a new life. Bloodhounds became companions and show dogs.

There is a belief that Bloodhounds were used to trail runaway slaves in the US. Those vicious dogs that did track people were mongrel crosses. Bloodhounds do not possess a vicious temperament.
