Bloodhound Dogs

Bloodhound dogs are the largest among hound breeds. The hallmark of the breed is its scenting ability, for which the Bloodhound is often called “a nose with feet.” The scary name of the breed means “pureblood hound.” The original purpose of the breed was tracking game by a scent left many hours ago. The nasal channels responsible for catching the scent in this breed are much larger than in other hound dogs.

Bloodhound dogs are not the easiest pets to own. They are very intelligent, but stubborn and not eager to please the owner. These dogs are very curious and active. They are interested in investigating new places and tracking interesting smells. When walked on the leash, Bloodhound dogs tend to pull hard. They often catch a trail and want to follow it. These dogs cannot be trusted as guards and personal protectors; they are neither territorial, nor protective. Very affectionate and well-mannered, these dogs make good playing companions for children. A high specialization of this breed leaves no place for performing other tasks.

Bred for hunting, Bloodhound dogs are bored when kept indoors or in a small yard. They require a long daily walk that provides them with enough exercise and mental stimulation. If not given food for thought, these dogs tend to develop behavior problems. A novice dog owner with no experience of a large dog ownership will find the exercise needs, food requirements and vet bills that a purebred Bloodhound may need a serious problem. The longevity of Bloodhound dogs is only 6-7 years. The breed is prone to a variety of hereditary health disorders that need expensive treatment.

Bloodhound puppies are often hyperactive and very curious. They follow their nose that often leads them into trouble. It’s very difficult to train a puppy of this breed. Though very intelligent, these dogs are very sensitive to corrections. They respond well only to positive motivation and enjoy interesting exercises. It may take much time to make a Bloodhound dog obey and form close bonds with the owner. Many owners of Bloodhound dogs who have bought them on impulse and cannot cope with active and disobedient pets surrender them to rescues.
