To keep a dog of this breed it is better to have a large fenced yard and a spacious house. These dogs eat a lot high quality and puppies require food always available. These dogs make good companions for children, guardians and are excellent at conformation and obedience.

Originally bred for tracking big game these dogs today lack the aggressiveness, but still have the best nose in the world, which makes them perfect at man trailing and rescue. The breed is not for beginners as it very active and requires much exercise. Bloodhound training may require human rescue, but breeders do not recommend them for first time owners.
