Bloodhound Picture
Ancient Bloodhound picture galleries date back to the 7th century A.D. The exact origin of the breed is unknown; all we know for sure is that several breeds were crossbred to create the “blooded hound.” The name of the breed reflects the purity of its blood. It took much effort to create a breed with an exceptionally keen sense of smell. The scenting ability of a dog depends on the size of the nasal chambers. In this breed, the nasal chambers are larger than those in other breeds. The Bloodhound is the only dog able to follow a scent left several days ago. One or two skin cells of a human or any mammal is enough for a Bloodhound to catch a scent and follow it.
Long pendent ears and loose skin folds that can be seen on any Bloodhound picture are very important. The ears prevent wind from scattering the smell; the skin folds on the face and neck assist in tracking the scent by keeping it close to the dog’s nose and reinforcing it in the dog’s memory. Bloodhounds usually work as solitary trackers. When on the trail, they don’t bark as some other hounds.
The present-day standard of the breed emphasizes its working abilities rather than conformation. In the Bloodhound picture, you can see purebred dogs that vary in size and coat color. The greater size is preferred in this breed, but the standard accepts dogs and bitches from 23 to 27 inches at the withers. The preferred weight of Bloodhound dogs varies from 80 to 110 pounds. Balance and proportion in this breed are more important than any measurement taken separately. The coat pattern in this breed can be bi-color (black and tan or liver and tan) or flecked with white. White markings are permissible.
Purebred Bloodhounds create an impression of dignity, solemnity, wisdom, and intelligence. In spite of their solemn looks, these dogs should be friendly, affectionate, and communicative. Bloodhound dogs are very shy around strangers and sensitive to correction. They are not the right choice for a novice dog owner. It’s unwise to obtain such a pet after seeing an attractive Bloodhound picture.
