Bloodhound Puppy
A Bloodhound puppy is a serious responsibility and commitment of both time and money. This breed is praised for its sense of smell, but it’s not recommended as a family pet, especially for inexperienced owners. Bloodhounds were created for tracking the game. If they don’t have an opportunity to hunt, they should be provided with much physical and mental exercise, otherwise they become bored and develop bad habits. Only experienced owners can understand the personality of this breed and cope with its keeping requirements.
It’s a challenge to train a Bloodhound puppy. Although all hounds are very intelligent, they have a mind of their own and lack a desire to please the owner. This characteristic of the Bloodhound dog may seem strange to a novice dog owner, but independent thinking is very important for the original purpose of the breed. The owner of a Bloodhound has to understand the purpose of the breed and choose the best suited methods of training. Bloodhound dogs should be motivated to obey. Drill and repetitive exercises are not for them. Training sessions should be interesting and stimulating. Treats are the best rewards for the Bloodhound.
The Bloodhound is a high maintenance breed. Though these dogs are hardy, endurable, and able to withstand cold, they should not be kept in the yard. Bloodhounds like to be around people, so they should be allowed indoors. This breed is an average shedder, but it slobbers and makes a mess around the house. Bloodhounds prefer active games both indoors and outdoors; they like to chase other animals, dig, chew on everything, and investigate new places. A Bloodhound puppy grows into a large dog up to 26 inches at the withers and up to 110 pounds in weight.
When purchasing a dog of this breed, keep in mind that Bloodhounds are prone to a number of hereditary disorders. It may be very expensive to treat your future pet, if it develops gastric disorders, cancer, eye or ear problems typical of the breed. The only way to minimize the risk of genetic diseases is obtaining a Bloodhound puppy from a responsible breeder who does everything possible to produce healthy dogs.
